How Do You Prepare for and Complete Dragon Slayer?
Velgar encounter in RuneScape: Dragonwilds
Treat Velgar as the final readiness check: tools, recovery items and a clear return route must all be ready before entering.

🐉 Preparation and encounter check

Gather the route inputs with the resource locations guide, prepare the combat setup and review the boss encounter checklist before travelling.

Read the next objective, compare your equipment with the area’s power expectation, and carry food, water and a fallback weapon. Explore nearby points of interest before the final push if you are underpowered. During the encounter, preserve a retreat path and change one variable at a time when testing a weapon or food setup. If completion does not register, reopen the journal before retrying.

The route gates that actually stop progression

The quest starts with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village and requires First Steps. Before the story route can advance, build a shelter with at least a foundation, three walls, a ceiling and a claimed bed roll. The first material gate is antlers for the locator step; use a ranged or magic weapon if deer keep escaping.

The dragon-tooth step requires an iron pickaxe at the dragon skull in Stormtouched Highlands. The Bloodblight Swamp material route requires the iron logging axe for bloodwood sap. Carry both tools and leave free inventory space for the quest reward. After defeating Velgar, return outside the tower and hand the head to the Wise Old Man; reaching the tower or defeating the dragon alone does not complete the quest.

Materials and tools to carry

Start Dragon Slayer with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village. The preparation list includes antlers, Ash Logs, Coarse Animal Fur, a Dragon Tooth, Bloodwood Sap and Bronze Bars; gathering the Dragon Tooth and Bloodwood Sap also requires an Iron Pickaxe and Iron Logging Axe. Check the live quest panel before using rare materials or making a long trip.

Before leaving, put the listed inputs in storage, confirm the two gathering tools are available rather than merely unlocked, and carry food plus a ranged or magic option if the route includes wildlife. After each major hand-in, reopen the journal and confirm the next part of the quest. Reaching the encounter area is not the same as completing the story step.

Split preparation into material, combat and recovery passes

Split preparation into three passes. First gather the antlers, ash logs, coarse animal fur, dragon tooth, bloodwood sap and bronze bars, plus the iron pickaxe and iron logging axe needed for gathering. Then check weapon class, armour durability, food, water and a fallback damage type. Finally, leave storage space, repair materials and a marked return route at your base.

Do not spend rare materials until the journal confirms that Dragon Slayer is active. Check the new objective after each hand-in because the next step may change the route or require another tool. If the encounter ends but the quest does not advance, note the objective text, inventory state, party or world mode before retrying. Change one condition at a time so you can identify what blocked progression.
