The first session should teach water, food, shelter, crafting and the journal loop before you chase optimisation.

🌅 First session route

When the first session is stable, continue to the beginner progression route, resource route and crafting stations.

Complete the early teaching sequence, place a small base near water, keep food and processing materials moving, and use the journal to record recipes and requirements. Explore points of interest instead of following only the main quest marker, but compare gear with the region power before taking a hard fight. The game loop is working when a resource run returns to a base that can process the next batch and prepare the next objective.

Follow the teaching sequence before optimising

Play First Steps before Dragon Slayer. It introduces the basic controls and leads into Getting Started, which teaches survival, hydration, sustenance and crafting.

Use the opening as a diagnostic tutorial: learn the station loop, food and water loop, combat input and magic interface before judging the later progression. After each lesson, perform the mechanic once and confirm the journal or recipe entry. That gives a new player a working baseline and makes later problems easier to isolate from a missed tutorial step.

Exact opening route

First Steps begins with the Wise Old Man in the Temple Woods temple. The tutorial sends you to Doric for Getting Started, then covers stations and building, Vannaka for hunting, fighting and cooking, and Zanik for magic and runes before returning to the Wise Old Man. The reward is Tome of Runecrafting - Vol 1. If you skipped the tutorial, find the Wise Old Man on the first floor of the ruined building at the far end of Bramblemead Village.

The first session is complete when the teaching sequence is finished, one shelter/base has a bed and storage, water and food can be replenished, and the player can read the next journal objective without guessing. Only then decide whether to push Dragon Slayer, expand the base or take a longer resource trip.

Define success for the first session

A new player does not need every system at once. The first session is successful when the player can read the journal, gather a basic material, craft or place a station, manage water and food, survive a simple encounter, and return to a known base. The First Steps and Getting Started references provide that teaching sequence; use it before judging the later Dragon Slayer route.

Keep the first base functional and reversible. Place the minimum survival and processing stations, learn where the output is stored, and mark one route to water and one route to the next objective. When a new mechanic appears, use it once and confirm the journal or recipe entry. If a player is confused, identify whether the problem is an interface, resource, quest prerequisite or combat action. This creates a reliable mental model before optimisation begins.

You’re done when

You are done when it tells a first-time player what the first session should accomplish and how to distinguish interface, resource, quest and combat confusion. The teaching sequence, water and food loop, basic station and return route should be demonstrated before the player is sent toward optimisation or late progression.
