Practice loop
Test the input with the weapon guide, check survivability with armour choices and practise on the route described in boss preparation.
Find a low-risk target and test one input at a time: attack, retreat, dodge, backstep and weapon swap. Keep enough stamina for one escape, then attack after the enemy commits. A successful input is visible as distance gained without emptying stamina or taking contact damage. If controls feel inconsistent, verify the active keybinds and controller layout in the current platform build before copying advice from an older video.
Check the input before changing your gear
Test dodge, backstep and block in a low-risk area with the same controller or keyboard layout used in the real encounter. Press one input at a time and note the distance, stamina cost and whether the enemy attack was already committed. A video recorded before a combat update can explain the idea, but your own build decides the timing you should use.
Practise the input in a controlled sequence
Test movement with no enemy first: press the input once, observe distance and stamina, then repeat while moving in each direction. Add a low-risk enemy and record the point at which the attack telegraphs, the point at which the dodge starts, and whether the move creates enough space for a counterattack. This separates a keybind or controller issue from a timing issue.
The combat update notes describe work on responsiveness and attack telegraphs, so state the build when giving timing advice. Do not combine dodge, backstep, block, stamina food and a weapon swap in one experiment. Change one action, repeat the same attack pattern, and compare the result. A player is ready for the real encounter when the movement input works reliably, stamina remains available for the retreat, and the route does not depend on an undocumented invulnerability window.
You’re done when
You are ready for a real encounter when the input works reliably, one escape remains available after an attack, and you can identify the enemy telegraph that triggers your retreat. If it fails, check the keybind, controller layout, latency and stamina separately before changing the weapon or build.
